This recording is a wonderful selection for young listeners. Many of the songs are well known to all, classics like "Aunt Rhody" and "Old King Cole", which recieve poignant and humorous treatment in Peter Blanchette's archguitar arrangments. One may also discover a gem from long ago as well, with "John Riley", "Barbara Allen,' and 'The Foggy, Foggy Dew."

The story of Peter Blanchette's collaboration with singer Jane Bryden on All Through the Night- A Family Songbook, is best described by Jane from the liner notes of the CD:

"In 1978, for my daughter Nell, I bought "The Great Song Book", edited by Timothy John and published by Doubleday, with charming illustrations by Tomi Ungerer. Nell grew up with those tunes, and for many years the book as a whole was a favorite of our family.

Last year, during a sabbatical leave, I received a grant from Smith College to make a recording of some of the songs from that collection. In fact, since Nell is now a singer, I thought such a recording would make an excellent mother-and-daughter collaboration. I have long felt that there are too few high-quality recordings for children, and would like to hope that this joint endeavor, in which my husband Chris has participated along with Peter Blanchette's son Chester and his friend Kenny Butler, will become a treasured part of the repertoire of music for chaildren and families.
